Friday PEAK SWELL DAY
Hi everyone, its Joe Walsh sending in a surf update from the southern zone of Costa Rica. Currently I am aboard the Zori, our new 48 ft. surf yacht, anchored in Drake Bay. Today seems to be the biggest the waves have been for this current swell. On the Osa Peninsula, we surfed Rio Claro, a left point / reef, that was breaking double overhead plus. We were a little undergunned (not to mention it was really heavy) so after a couple of waves we took off and went north. We found some 6-8ft waves breaking outside of the Rio Serpe, and we tried to surf them, but there was just too much water moving around. It was more like a 30 minute paddle session against the high tide push that was shooting us up into the river mouth. Here in Drake Bay there is a left wrapping into the bay that is about head high and seems super clean, with light offshore winds. The locals are saying its the biggest it has been in quite some time. Outside of Drake Bay along the west coast of Osa, a local surfer claimed Punta LLorena was 25 feet and throwing. I didn't see it personally so I can't say if it was really breaking that big, but definitely there are triple overhead waves breaking along this stretch of coast and basically nobody out surfing. It is a MACKING swell. Tomorrow we'll pull into Gulfo Dulce and hopefully get some waves a little more manageable surf (or some bigger boards!)
